PÉREZ

"Did dedication really pay off?"
— Intro Card description

Carlos Pérez is a second-lieutenant (abreviated 2LT) working for the BloodHound Unit in Occator. He is in charge for some of the lower-ranks' trainings, often staying on-site during the day for administrative purposes.

Pérez is a second lieutenant in the BloodHound Unit who has stayed for multiple years in his position after graduating from a military academy due to a feeling of having to uphold to his father's wishes of him to be something "manlier" than what he planned before - which was to be a writer ever since elementary. He was an English major with a focus in creative writing for 3 years from 18 until 21, at that age he entered a military academy for proper training as his father wished. This decision caused quite the conflict in his family, splitting his mother and father's opinions about the situation.

Personality

He has a very stern, pragmatic and impenetrable exterior which shows 80% of the time and only is taken off occasionally around co-workers and people of trust. It usually isn't easy to get a reaction or much emotion out of him, due to his inability to properly express his emotions. He's started bottling up and dealing internally with his emotions once he enlisted into the BloodHound Unit, as a result of his responsabilities giving him no time to be emotional and people depending on him.

He is very dishonest as a result of hiding away his own emotions and closing himself in, lying frequently and unapologetically. He feels bad when he does so to people who trust him and who he trusts, but he sees it as necessary.

He has a lot of trouble apologizing to others when he is at fault, he almost never does in fact. He indulges in favouritism amongst people, and he doesn't feel much empathy to people out of his favourites. It's almost to the point where he will not communicate to anybody else except for them at times, being annoyed at the slightest outside interaction.

He overthinks a lot and is very visibly more strategical in what he wants to do, say, or think. Even more when it's around the people closest to him.

His sleep schedule is absolutely awful, which doesn't help since his job tends to be very tiring and it's not all days where he'll be able to slack around for hours to catch up on his sleep. He pushes through it though, but his eyebags are noticeable as a result of his poor sleep hygiene. He tends to sleep between 6 and 4 hours per night. Usually due to just an inability to sleep earlier despite trying, and he refuses to see a doctor about it because he thinks it's fine and it'll fix itself someday if he does an all-nighter.

Despite his serious attitude, he is unapologetically teasing towards people he doesn't like and has a lot of space for hate in his heart. He doesn't get extremely mad often but when he does get pissed, it's noticeable.

He isn't an emotionally vulnerable person, he has a lot of internalized hatred for his emotions and weaknesses. He doesn't voice them out nor make them a known fact, but when someone learns of it, it brings a lot of shame onto him. He also just doesn't share his emotions because he doesn't want his weakness to be exploited if learned about by other people that might be out for his guts.

History

His life has done many turns on him - his plans for the future changing, getting into many conflicts with people, having to make a choice between personal and professional gain, having to take responsabilities and stack them like they're nothing and having to hold up his job because people depend on him now. Even now he's still reconsidering the choices he's made, and is figuring himself out.

His military career itself dates back a bit but he became a Second Lieutenant short after his graduation from a military academy. He's been a Second Lieutenant for a few years now, although he could be ranked up to First Lieutenant. He's denied rank-ups multiple times as he's gotten used to this job and thinks it suits him pretty well, and he feels right with his current co-workers.

Childhood

He's wanted to pursue a literary career when he was in elementary, and it stayed that way until near the end of highschool, which is a reason why he has a degree in creative writing. His father had high stakes for him though an thought of poetry as a stupid thing for his son to do, and projected his younger self's ambitions to become a soldier onto him. Pérez was very reluctant about it but decided to eventually do so. Even after his father's passing, he's continued his job due to feeling like people rely on him and that he is needed for once, also to honour his father. He still writes from time to time and hasn't given up on it.

He was very lonely as a teenager, staying in solitude most of the time. Which he thinks is for the better, to his jealous and possessive attitude towards his friends due to a toxic over-protective mindset he used to have. He was extremely cautious about the people he talked to, having a feeling like anyone who tries to befriend him is doing so only for advantages or for favors as it had happened in the past. He's set himself into that mentality that he's worth nothing more than favors when it comes to friendships and that people only talk to him to fix their own personal issues.

adulthood

He learned recently that his father's cause of death was a car accident where he lost control of the car and drove off a road, hitting a tree, breaking the windshield and propulsing him forward as he'd forgotten to buckle his seatbelt. When he learned the news, he was 32, already working in the BloodHound Unit and already grown away from his family. He didn't exactly know how to take in the news, though it did leave him in a mental state of shock for a few days, not that anybody really noticed aside from the people he had close to him at that time.

Relationships

Kabeš

Pérez's "relationship" with Kabeš is a bit complex due to the nature of their interactions, which started out hostile because they're from opposing sides. Though, the hostility wasn't a problem for Pérez as it was something he needed to be used to as a military officer, so it didn't feel out of place. Despite that, they slowly got closer to eachother, their relationship growing each time they visited eachother's place. It first started as bribery, Pérez being offered to get his scarf back in exchange of letting Kabeš in, which he is still confused about but didn't see much of an issue with.

Pérez is very touch-starved and has experienced complications with sleeping in the past due to a lack of physical affection, even for one night. He is a bit protective over Kabeš, and likes to spend time with him. Most of their interactions now remain calm, which is a huge change from what it used to be. And even though he should be glad, Pérez does still kind of miss this small, teasing rivalry between the two of them and has a hard time thinking of them in a serious relationship.

Oskar Miller

Oskar and Pérez are familiar with each other with the fact that Pérez works under Oskar's supervision, and they share some personal stuff with one another. Oskar is aware of Pérez's past ambitions to become a poet or creative writer of some sort and is aware of the fact he feels a need to uphold his father's honour by staying in the BloodHound Unit, though he's not encouraging him to leave, and rather encourages him to stay and do his best.

Oskar is also mildly aware of Pérez and Kabeš's relationship, though to a limited extent. He was also the one Kabeš had to go to to sign a temporary truce for the holiday times in 2024, from Christmas until a few days after New Years.
Pérez also saw Oskar and Gabriel in Oskar's office once because he accidentally walked in too enthusiastic about showing something he discovered, but he vowed to never speak about it as it could be very badly seen and could make Oskar out to look like a traitor.

Andrea

Pérez is Andrea's overseer and next in the line of hierarchy. He's responsible for her training and weapon stock, and is responsible for her well-behaviour in general. He has respect towards her for her expertise and seriousness, but can be a bit exasperated from Samir and Andrea's endless chasing and banter. Andrea doesn't think too much of Pérez, just thinks he's a respectable guy who doesn't speak much, just as she does.

Samir

Samir and Pérez are co-workers, Samir working under Pérez for missions. They're close mostly due to the role of supervisor Pérez takes over Samir, and also the fact that Pérez is one of the people that support Samir in his dreams of becoming a military pilot. He got him in a 3-month-long course to learn flying helicopters with BloodHound Unit higher-ups.
Over the time, Pérez and Samir grew to label each other as friends, Samir finds Pérez's personality enjoyable when he's "not being all grumpy". Though, Samir's excitable and hyperactive personality leads Pérez to be a bit tired of his shenanigans, and one thing he certainly doesn't like from Samir is how concerned he is for his well-being sometimes.

Idiosyncrasies

Habits

  • Keeps his hair tied in a ponytail, whether the ponytail is short or long.
  • Tends to aim for center mass, mostly the middle of the torso, rather than the head or limbs. But, if he had to hit someone in a non-lethal point, it'd likely be the middle of the lower leg.
  • He seems to never take his scarf off outside, no matter how hot it might be. It's his characteristic, and he (as well as other people) find it very weird seeing him without it.

Pet peeves

  • Apple slices that aren't crunchy and feel more mushy than anything
  • Visible long-lasting combat scars on himself
  • Arrogant people in general
  • People who seem to ask too many questions

Quirks

  • His footsteps are heavy on purpose, as to make his presence known and to be heard when coming somewhere, but he can quiet down easily.

Speech

His voice is rather calculated and precise, accentuating on his words quite well. It has a deep sound to it, but not that low. It's smooth and doesn't have traces of an accent, except from when he speaks using a mix of Spanish and English.

Laughter - His laughs are usually brief, not dragging out a lot. He rarely ever giggles, naturally.
Swearing - He swears a lot when frustrated, but the rest of the time, he actually doesn't swear unless he feels like it's necessary for him to let out some anger. He likes to have a calm and cool image of himself.
Languages - English and Spanish (mother tongue), fluent in both.

Tactics and Proficiency

Melee combat

He's actually pretty good at close-distance or melee combat, though that's not shown a lot as he tends to stay away from direct conflict. Though, he could kick someone's ass. Sometimes he just dumbs down his abilities in front of certain people.

Ranged combat

Mostly knows his way around rifles out of anything else, has decent aim. He can handle pistols and such, as required by his job.

Tactics

He's more the type of person to wait for the perfect pin-point moment before firing or before attacking, he's not a very irrational person. He knows that any little mistake during a mission or just a carried-out order can cause an entire operation to go down in the small span of seconds. He often tries keeping his cool in combat situations, letting the other person seem like a crazy bastard for getting angry or riled up.

Support

Knows basic first-aid and emergency maneuvers, but definitely shouldn't be trusted with major injuries.

Appearance

Pérez appears to be a masculine adult with tan skin and blue-greyish eyes. His right eye is blind and has a large scar tracing over it that goes to the bottom of his face, which makes his eye look clear white. He has stitches on his left cheek. He has long light brown hair which goes halfway down his back when untied. His hair gets darker as it goes down, and the roots of his hair are darker. His palms are a lighter color as a result of his darker skin, his hands seem rather rough and have scars over them. He has darker marks on his wrists. He has a lot of thin scars at his inner lower arms, near his wrists, likely self-inflicted. He has scars all over his body, small and big, but most notably on his chest near his heart, one going across his upper left arm and one on the side of his lower left leg.

He wears his military uniform when on-duty but off-site, which consists of an eyepatch over his right eye, a gray long-sleeved shirt with rolled up sleeves, a pitch-black long-sleeved undershirt which covers his lower arms, gray fingerless gloves, a darker-gray bulletproof vest and an olive green scarf. He wears gray cargo pants with lighter gray military boots. He has a black belt around his waist where he can clip on pockets to transport multiple items easier. He also has a dark green helmet which he puts on when required. His hair is tied up in at least a small tuft as to not let it all down when he is on duty.

Otherwise, in formal situations or when casually on-site, he wears his service uniform which consists of a dark three-pocket coat with a belted waist, the coat going a bit further after the belt, with two lower pockets after the belt and a pocket on the the right side of his chest. There are small, olive-green patches sewed onto the top corners of the coat's collar. He wears at least one small badge figuring on the left side of his coat. He wears pitch-black gloves and has a white long-sleeved shirt underneath, with an olive green tie tied around underneath the shirt's collar. He wears darker, slightly loose trousers with black boots. He wears his hear in a ponytail when in his service uniform as to seem more presentable.

When staying in his room, he likes to keep at least a white tanktop with black trousers on. He prefers to wear shirts though. He lets his hair down and has a more casual appearance.

Trivia

  • His favourite food is Enchilada, his favorite color is green (...yeah I mean if you couldn't guess that yourself) and his favourite animals are snakes.
  • He didn't get to see his father before he passed away early. His mother gets to visit him once per year.
  • Nobody ever saw him cry, at least except from his childhood years. And it's unlikely that anyone will.
  • He has explanations for each scar on his body though it may not be detailed at all. The only one he'll refuse to explain is the biggest one: the scar on his eye. Nobody has an idea on why.
  • He's more used to hot weather than the cold, so if it's cold outside he will likely dress in very warm clothes.
  • He used to do sports a lot more when he wasn't in the military yet to get in better shape. It's not something he needs anymore because he's already having physical training and exercise on the daily. He does go to the gym when he's had a bad day to take some weight off his shoulders though.
  • His favourite genre of music is heavy metal. People usually think he's into classical music because it seems like a genre a guy like him would listen to, but no. He likes Metallica, Megadeth and Slipknot and have been listening to those bands since the 2010s, when he was 19.
